There is a weird girl in the car: SxSW 2005
Here is my personal contribution to the myriad blogs about this year's SxSW music festival in Austin, Tx.
First and foremost, I had an AWESOME time - more fun than I could have imagined. And I owe a HUGE thank you to the excellent people at Dan Workman Music for bringing me on as an intern and for giving me the opportunity to work SxSW with them. Work, yes, but also a lot of fun. Devon, Logan, Dan, Josh, John, Hank, Mykel, Jason, Mikey, and Brittany - thanks again for EVERYTHING! I almost went home on Saturday night, and I am SO GLAD I decided not to, as Saturday night was pretty much the most fun night of all. I was hanging with Devon all night (she rules) and we did tons of cool stuff.
Also I need to mention that a huge part of the fun was due to Ian and Patrick from Drop Trio. They were kind enough to hang out with me when several people from Dan Workman were feeling too under the weather to go out on Friday night, plus we all just kept running into each other everywhere. Ian was also responsible for the magnifico suggestion that we see the Alex Skolnick Trio --- out of all of the shows I was able to see at SxSW, that was definitely my favorite one.....well, it was either them or Hollister Fracus - those two groups are tied for best show that I saw at SxSW. That whole night at the Flamingo Cantina was awesome (see? I'm talking about Saturday night again). Then Devon, Ian, Patrick and I all went to Star Seeds for some after-hours foodstuffs. Although the service was just a tad slow (we were there for 3 hours), I have to say that I really had a blast hanging out with some groovy humans.
And Dude! You should have seen those pancakes!
I know I can not possibly include every excellent thing about SxSW because there was so very much that this entry would never end, but I am trying to at least mention a bit about all of the cool things that we did. And it is still a very long blog entry. Oh well - justice must be done.
Here is a list of the bands I was able to see perform while there:
Thursday PM
Droptet - Agave (this is Drop Trio with Dan Workman on guitar and Casio) :P
Next Best Thing - Agave
Southern Backtones - Agave
Drop Trio - Elephant Room
Hollister Fracus - Agave

Alex Skolnick Trio - Flamingo Cantina
Apocalyptica - Flamingo Cantina
Very Be Careful - Flamingo Cantina
Bio Ritmo - Flamingo Cantina

Damn! That's a lot of music!
Highlights:
- meeting the guys from Biomechanical - Jon, John, Jamie, Chris and Matt - thanks for the shirts and CDs!!
- Death Metal Pizza - Hoek's on 6th street...w00t!!
- going to Star Seeds with Devon, Ian, and Patrick
- Dan Workman Agave show - Hollister Fracus ROCKED OUT!!!! Also I can't wait for the live upload of Melody Melody that Drop Trio did with Dan that night!
- Dan Workman Mother Egan's show - I got to meet Sarah Sharp and Glenna Bell :)
- ISIS - bassist from Tool performed with them, thank you Devon, Adrian and James, very cool.
- Magnolia Cafe - cool place to eat on Congress
- Alex Skonlick Trio - former guitarist for Testament - they played War Pigs - Awesome!
- Apocalyptica - ROCK! Master Of Puppets, Seek and Destroy
- Drop Trio running out of CDs @ Elephant Room - Yay, we LOVE it when this happens :) Especially after hearing their whole set - people were coming up to me telling me how totally effected they were by Drop Trio' s performance - and I'm, like, "I know...right??". They seemed to be begging me to fabricate a CD out of thin air....it was RAD!!
NOTE: It hit me after I wrote this that I did not go on and on about the Drop Trio and Southern Backtones performances at SxSW. I've thought about it and I think it is because in my talking about shows I went to at SxSW, I was subliminally only considering new performers to talk about...ones I had never seen before, because DoC knows that I spend tons of my time going on about these bands on a daily basis already. However, it really must be said that both of their shows kicked ass. SB at Ruta Maya was probably my favorite out of the 3 (of 5!) SxSW related shows they did that I was able to go to. Also Drop Trio at Agave was awesome with Dan playing the guitar (and casio), but I especially loved the Melody-Melody with Dan. The Elephant Room was also spectacular and I'm just ALL about waiting for them to upload the recordings of these shows - it is going to be some GREAT stuff. See? There is just WAY too much to try to get it all in one blog entry. :P

Jaime:
YOU ruled! We could not have done nearly as much without you. As for my performance, you are too kind. You know that Ian, Mike and Patrick could make a brick look good onstage.
You are a valuable member of the DWM team. WOOT WOOT!!

Drop Trio, Alex Skolnick Trio, Dub Trio ... that's a lot of trios. And ... Droptet ... Drop Trio ... they should really make up their mind.
SXSW ... come see the amazing Jamie ... she can materialize Drop Trio CDs out of thin air!
